Welcome to 10 Bands. I’ve been playing the hits, the misses, the B-sides and the deep tracks at WXPN and World Cafe in Philadelphia for thirty years. I’ve been writing about music, first for my fanzine, “The Blaster,” since the 80s, freelanced for a bunch of magazines, newsies and zines (Option, The Bob, B-Side, Phila Weekly, Inquirer, etc.) and I started my music blog, Some Velvet Blog, back in 2004, which I stopped writing in 2015. Well, it’s 2021, and it’s time to bring back the jams.
The name of this newsletter was inspired by Drake’s “10 Bands.” I won’t necessarily write about 10 bands in each issue. Some might have 50. Maybe a hunnid. Some might have two or three. Everyone is pressed for time. Demand for ears and attention is at an all time high. I get it. I’ll put something together to send out a couple times a month.
My hope is that you’ll experience some music discovery. And if you like it, please share it with a friend who is into music.
And PS: I hate to even say this, but if you’re in the biz, ya know, a publicist or a promoter, please don’t “work” me on writing about your records. Save that for my real job,. Love you all.
