So I guess if you asked their fans, Charly Bliss are kindof like an indie-ish, power-punk-popish band. The story here is they just announced their first new lp in five years, and with it, a new song, “Nineteen.” Ok. Since day one, CB’s sound has been guitar driven. This new song? Not much guitar. In fact, it’s quite a musical departure. I guess this is kind of like when Poison dropped “Every Rose Is A Thorn,” exchanging their glamrock for the power ballad. On “Nineteen,” CB have done dropped their guitars for the power ballad with heavy intention and damn this is so good. It’s almost like too good.
The Lemon Twigs have released their new album, A Dream Is All We Know, and it’s pretty fantastic. Especially if you dig the crafty power pop/rock thing that people who like Big Star deep tracks, own the Jelllyfish box set, kneel at the alter of Brian Wilson and wish Velvet Crush would make another record.
Wiki says “Berit Dybing, known as Ber, is an American indie pop singer-songwriter.” That’s about all I know about Ber. What I do know is that in the crowded and teetering on an over-saturated continuum of indie-pop singers like Rodrigo/McAlpine/Abrams writing some excellent confessional songs, Ber’s new EP is a stand out.
I love Drake. I love Kendrick. As a fan of both I’m conflicted. But the rap beefs are sometime the gifts that keep giving. And Teddy gets the sample credit.
It’s infectious! The new illuminati hotties song, “Can’t Be Still,” is just right. on. time.
Finally, if you don’t know Philly super guitarist Chris Forsyth, now you do. He’s a fucking flamethrower of a guitarist. From his long form Solar Motel jams and various experimental musical excursions to his Neil tribute band, Coca Leaves & Pearls, Chris just released a live performance of the now classic Love Devotion Surrender album originally recorded by Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin and their respective bands (Santana/Mahavishnu Orchestra). The performance was part of the (non-profit) Philly Music Fest last October at Solar Myth. Chris was on an incredible double bill that also included a performance of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters album, with a band put together by The War On Drugs drummer, Charlie Hall. After you towel off from watching Forsyth and the band take on “A Love Supreme,” check out the full performance on Bandcamp below.
Haha! I was getting concerned
Thanks for the recommendations. Especially guitarist Chris Forsyth. Years ago I saw a Mahavishnu cover band do the entire Birds of Fire album.
