Hey friends. Not apologizing for this bit of promotion here. This morning at 9am we played song #885 as WXPN kicked off our annual listener voted countdown of the 885 Greatest Songs of the Century. Approximately 3800 listeners voted for up to ten songs each. As I type this, we’re up to song number 780, “Are You Alright” by the legend Lucinda Williams. A couple songs before that, in at #782, we played the legend Kendrick Lamar, “M.A.A.D. City.”
So far, there’ve been lots of surprises, however the range of musicians and “genres” has been pretty stunning. Phish, Beyonce, The Strokes, Coldplay, Zero 7, Built To Spill, Fiona Apple, The XX, Lord Huron, Tool, Lana Del Rey, boygenius, The 1975, Incubus, Sault, PJ Harvey, Emmylou Harris, and many more have been played.
We’re stretching the countdown out for a week. We pick up the countdown weekdays at 9am; on the weekends we’ll start at 10am.
Are these the greatest songs of the last 25 years? They are to someone. Maybe they are to you as well.
Here’s a nice surprise that came in at #796
