Hello hello hello.
Back again w/ some more new jams. Quality, not quantity is my business.
Hope there’s something for you here.
As always, you can follow my Damn. New Music 2025 playlist for all these new jams and more.
“Stevie & Sly” by Young Gun Silver Fox - Soft rock/yacht rock geniuses are back with a new instant stunner. “Take me back to Stevie & Sly/take me back to 1975.” ‘75, the year I graduated high school, so this shit courses through my veins. Yacht or nyacht? This is pure yacht ready to perfectly slide into a mix with The Dan, McDonald-era Doobies, Ned Doheny, Pablo Cruise - you name ‘em.
’Perennial ‘65” by Perennial - Don’t need to overthink this one. New England ‘60s inspired mod/garage/punk trio Perennial pull on some Kinks, The Jam, some Wicked Pickett, The Sonics, and rock it up. Extra points for the beat.
“Hey Baby” by Florry
There’s been no other local Philly band I’ve seen more in the last couple years than Florry. For me, they just hit this very sweet spot where slacker indie meets classic rock and Americana and they do it super well. Lead singer & guitarist Francie Medosch is an unassuming star and in concert, the seven piece combine to bring a super fun & wonderful, almost sloppy but always in control vibe. If you missed their ‘23 lp The Holey Bible, do some homework. On this new song, I hear the crew drawing on the ramshackle American Stars ‘N’ Bars side of their love for Neil.
“Relationships” by Haim
Great to have a new song by Alana, Este, and Danielle - the HAIM sisters - back in rotation. We’re a few months away from the Summer but what we got here is the first great song for it.
“raat ki rani” by Arooj Aftab, remixed by Khruangbin
Originally on last year’s Night Reigns, “raat ki rani” gets a vibed out groove touched remix - performed, arranged, and produced by one of our fave instrumental trios, Khruangbin. The immediate beat will touch you down in Soul II Soul territory ("Keep On Movin’”), deftly mixed with Aftab’s intoxicating vocals. I like the direction here.
“More More More” by Mt. Joy
I’ll be honest - me and this crew go back to their very beginning, given Matt & Sam’s Philly roots. Always been a fan. I like how this one unfolds, from the “you can’t always get what you want-ness” of the build to the payoff at around 2:26, which I suspect when I see them again in concert, tens of thousands will be singing along to. Count on it.
Until next time, keep resisting. I’m out.
